Suicide Risk Factors
Sometimes we think that depression is the only risk factor for suicide, but it is wrong thought; since there are some experiences in the life of a child, adolescent, or young adult that put them at greater risk.
Some of the main risk factors that can increase the risk of suicide in children or adolescents and young adults are:
Family history of depression or suicide
Psychological disorders, especially depression, bipolar disorder, and/or disorders caused by alcohol and drug abuse.
Previous suicide attempt
Access to a firearm
Stressful life events or losses and lack of family support
Serious medical condition and/or severe pain
Concerns about sexual identity
History of abuse or having suffered severe harassment
Protection Factors
Some things in life can help protect a person from suicidal thoughts and attempts:
Connection with the community
Support from friends and family
Spiritual beliefs that value life and oppose suicide
Access to medical care and treatment
Problem-solving skills
Healthy lifestyle habits (with no substance abuse)
